Students of Government College of Applied Human Science Block Both Sides of Azimpur Road With One-Point Demand for Principal's Resignation
Students of the Government College of Applied Human Science (formerly the College of Home Economics) in the capital's Azimpur are holding a sit-in blocking both sides of the road, demanding the resignation of the college principal.
From 10 a.m. on Friday, 6 November, the students began their protest and blockade, stopping traffic on this important section of the road. Traffic on the road came to a complete halt as a result.
According to sources among the protesting students, Principal Dr Meherunnesa faces allegations of various irregularities, arbitrariness and threats to cancel residential hall seats.
In addition, a demand for a fine of 12,600 taka from students for the auditorium's electricity bill created extreme anger among general students. It is in protest against these administrative injustices and threats that the students have taken to the movement with the one-point demand of the principal's resignation.
Earlier, in the face of various demands, students had confined Principal Dr Meherunnesa in her own office from Thursday morning. After she remained confined all day, police arrived late at night and rescued her.
The students allege that while freeing the confined principal late at night, police charged with batons and attacked the unarmed female students. Several students were seriously injured and were later admitted to hospital. In protest against that night's incident, and demanding the principal's resignation, the students regrouped from Friday morning and are continuing their movement with a sit-in on the Azimpur road.
