Teenager Mehdi Hasan drowns after being swept away while bathing in Reju Canal in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar

A teenager named Mehdi Hasan, 18, has died after being swept away by the current while bathing in the Reju Canal beside the Marine Drive road in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Locals said the incident happened at around 12:30pm on Friday (6 November).

Mehdi Hasan was the son of Anju Mia of the Beat Office area of Ward No. 2 of Jaliapalong Union in Ukhiya.

Locals said Mehdi Hasan went down into the Reju Canal to bathe at noon. At that time he was swept away by the strong current of the water.

Later, at around 1:30pm, local fishermen rescued him and took him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. There, the doctor on duty declared him dead. The body was then taken home.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman Majumdar said he had learned of the death of a teenager who went down to bathe in the Reju Canal. No complaint had yet been received from the family; legal action would be taken if a complaint is received, he said.
