A passenger microbus lost control and rammed into a parked covered van on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Sreenagar in Munshiganj, leaving nine people injured, including the driver. The front of the microbus was mangled in the crash and the driver was trapped inside the vehicle.

The accident took place at around 4:15 in the morning today, Saturday (7 November), on the Mawa-bound lane of the expressway near the Sreenagar ferry ghat area of the upazila.

The injured are Rumpa Khatun (35), wife of Mehedi Matabbar of Madaripur Sadar upazila; Mim Akter (18), daughter of Siraj Matabbar; Khadija Akter (18), daughter of Kalam Matabbar; Italy expatriate Rasel Matabbar (30), son of Siraj Matabbar; Siraj Matabbar (70), son of Ekhlas Matabbar; Roni Matabbar (28), son of Kalam Matabbar; and Mehedi (35), son of Mannan Khan. Also injured are microbus driver Md Ibrahim (36), son of Khalek of Goran in Khilgaon, Dhaka, and Al-Amin (30) of Mymensingh.

It was learnt that relatives were taking Italy expatriate Rasel Matabbar from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to their home in Madaripur in the microbus. On the way, the driver lost control due to excessive speed and the vehicle hit the parked covered van with great force.

Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of the Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the Sreenagar fire station received news of the accident at 4:18 am on Saturday.

After receiving the news, two rescue units from the fire station rushed to the scene and rescued the injured, including the driver trapped inside the vehicle.

They were later taken to the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex by fire service ambulance, where the injured are being treated.
