At least five people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured after shots were fired in the main market square of Krakow, Poland. Regional police gave the information on Saturday.

According to Małopolska Police, a man drove a car into the market at around 3pm local time and began firing shots at random people.

The incident occurred near Sławkowska Street, just off the main square. According to the local government, initial information suggests the shots were fired from a passing vehicle.

Officials said the perpetrator was shot by police. He has been taken to a hospital.

The Krakow municipal government said emergency services are urging people not to approach areas where police officers and rescue workers are operating.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he is being kept informed about the shooting, and that police are 'investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack.'

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose called the shooting 'horrific' in a post on social media, describing it as 'a savage and murderous attack that's shattered the peace of Poland.'

Rose said, 'What we know so far is that several innocent precious lives were viciously cut down on a Saturday afternoon in Kraków's historic and iconic central square.'

He added, 'America stands with Poland at this dark hour as Poland stands with her beloved citizens of Krakow. May the blessed memory of those lost today assuage the grief of those who mourn.'

Authorities said the situation is still developing, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
