At least six people have been killed and at least 15 more injured in a shooting in an open square in the Polish city of Krakow. The attack took place on Saturday afternoon at the city's historic Main Market Square.

Police said four women and two men were among those killed. Two police officers were among the injured, and one of them is in critical condition.

According to police, the suspect drove a car into the Main Market Square and then began firing indiscriminately.

Poland's interior ministry said police have taken the suspect into custody. He is a Polish citizen. At the time of the attack he was wearing clothing resembling a military uniform and was carrying a military-style weapon.

Police said several weapons were recovered from the seized car. The weapons used in the attack may have been brought from the suspect's home, and the investigation is ongoing.

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the suspect is not a member of Poland's armed forces. He described the incident as a 'terrorist attack.'

At a press conference, Kosiniak-Kamysz called on everyone to stand united. He said many people in hospital were fighting for their lives, including a police officer who played a role in stopping the attacker from firing further.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski also held a press conference after the shooting. He said police shot the suspected attacker to stop him.

There is no information so far that more than one person was involved, the interior minister said.

Kierwinski also said the suspected attacker was inspired by 'far-right ideology.' He is a Polish citizen, aged 25, and his home is being searched.

The mayor of Krakow, Lukasz Gibala, has declared mourning until Wednesday following the deadly shooting.
