US military fires on cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, leaving it disabled

Staff Reporter

The US military has fired on and disabled a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was flagged in St. Kitts, according to the reports.

The US military said the vessel had ignored warnings about breaching the US blockade of Iran. That, it said, was why it fired on the ship.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates said on Sunday that it had rescued 22 sailors from a burning ship near Hormuz.

The incident comes at a time of rising tension in the Gulf region and continued friction over the US blockade around Iran.

The US military said the ship was left disabled after it was fired upon. No further details were given about the condition of the crew or the current state of the vessel.

No further details were available either about the UAE rescue operation. The authorities did not say what caused the fire on the ship or what condition the rescued sailors were in.
