Priest Killed as Crucifix Collapses During Live-Streamed Mass; Ecuador in Mourning
A Catholic priest has lost his life in a tragic accident in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. During a prayer service (Mass) that was being broadcast live, a large wooden crucifix collapsed on him while he was preparing the communion. The death occurred amid worshippers rushing in to try to save him, turning the entire ceremony into grief and panic in an instant.
The deceased priest's name is Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari. On Saturday, he was standing at the altar of the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro church in Guayaquil, preparing for communion. At that very moment, the large wooden crucifix behind him suddenly tilted forward and struck him.
The ceremony was being broadcast live on social media. As a result, the moment of the accident and the desperate situation that followed were caught on camera. Screams can be heard throughout the church in the video; worshippers rush to the priest and cry out for help. A woman's voice can also be heard in the video pleading, "Father, Father… call an ambulance."
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the news of his death in a statement posted on Facebook. In the statement, he was identified as the parish priest of the Perpetuo Socorro church under the Central Vicariate.
In the archdiocese's condolence message, it was said in Spanish that their beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari has gone to "the Father's house" to enjoy His presence and glory. At the end of the message, eternal rest was prayed for him in a Latin prayer — may he rest in eternal peace.
A coincidence of timing has made this death even more heartbreaking. Ecuadorian media outlet Primicias reported that just one day before the accident, the archdiocese had congratulated him on the anniversary of his ordination as a priest. The day after the festive congratulations came the news of mourning.
Father Sánchez Molinari was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, who are known as the Redemptorists. Before taking charge in Guayaquil, he was for several years the parish priest of the San Lorenzo church in the city of Vinces in Ecuador's Los Ríos province, Primicias reported.
His former parish, San Lorenzo, also paid tribute on social media. According to the newspaper El Universo, the people of that parish remembered him for his devotion and priestly love, which he left behind in that community.
There is still confusion over the cause of the accident. Why the crucifix suddenly broke or tilted, church authorities had given no public explanation as of Sunday. As a result, whether the accident was merely a mechanical fault or there was a structural problem — the answer to that question is still unknown.
A prayer service, which for believers is a moment of peace and solace, turned into a tragedy witnessed also by the countless people watching the live broadcast. The panicked screams and rushing about of those present inside the church made the horror of this incident even clearer.
The process of bidding him farewell has begun through the archdiocese's formal condolence message and the tribute from his former parish. Details of his funeral or memorial service are not yet known.
All in all, this incident is not just an accident; it has also raised fresh questions about safety and structural maintenance in places of worship such as churches. Grieving believers are now looking toward the investigation into why the crucifix collapsed and the authorities' subsequent explanation.
