Man Charged With Seven Offences After Alleged Gun Incident Sparked Dulwich Hill Lockdown in Sydney
Police have arrested a man over last week's alleged gun incident in Dulwich Hill, in Sydney's inner west, Australia. He has been charged with seven offences, including possessing a firearm and armed robbery.
The incident began at about 10.20am on Friday, when police were called to a car park on Williams Parade in Dulwich Hill after reports of an alleged stolen vehicle. Officers were told a man was allegedly armed with a firearm inside the stolen car.
According to the allegations, the man then allegedly set fire to the car. The incident prompted a lockdown-style situation in the area and police began an investigation.
Then, at 11.30pm last night, the 32-year-old man was arrested in Burwood. According to police, he allegedly attempted to evade officers at the time of his arrest.
The arrested man has been charged with a total of seven offences. They include possessing a shortened firearm (not a pistol) without authority, and acquiring a prohibited firearm while subject to a prohibition order.
The other charges include robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, possessing a housebreaking implement, destroying or damaging property, driving a conveyance without the consent of the owner, and driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period.
The charges indicate police are not treating the matter as a firearms incident alone; allegations such as vehicle theft and robbery are also attached to it. Investigators are examining the full picture of what happened.
Dulwich Hill is a residential area in Sydney's inner west. News of an armed man there during the daytime caused alarm among local residents. Police moved in and put security measures in place around the area.
The arrest closes the initial phase of the incident, but the legal process is now beginning. The accused is expected to appear in court, where the next decisions on the charges will be made.
Further information may emerge from the police investigation — particularly about the alleged stolen car and the source of the firearm. Once those details come out, the full sequence of the incident will become clearer.
