Government is committed to protecting citizens’ rights, says Sylhet City Corporation administrator

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 1 min

The administrator of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has said the government is firmly committed to protecting the rights of citizens. He highlighted the pledge while speaking about ensuring fair rights and services for city residents.

A city corporation is the closest service-providing institution for urban residents. From birth registration to waste management, roads, lighting and drainage, people receive everyday services from this body, which makes the administrator’s remarks directly significant for residents.

Sylhet city is growing fast in both population and urbanisation. As new areas are absorbed into the city, demand for services keeps rising, and meeting that demand is the corporation’s biggest challenge.

Citizens’ rights do not mean only the right to vote; receiving timely, hassle-free public services is also part of those rights. Observers say the administrator’s statement reflects a promise to ensure exactly that.

How far the government’s commitment is reflected in reality will depend on the speed of service delivery on the ground and how quickly complaints are resolved. Residents hope the pledge will not remain on paper alone.

As the heart of Sylhet Division, the quality of services in this city is tied to life across the region, since countless people travel into Sylhet city every day from surrounding districts for work, treatment and education.

It remains to be seen how quickly visible improvements in civic services follow the administrator’s pledge. City residents will be watching for that change.
