Coffee Cultivation Prospects Stir Fresh Discussion in Tea Town Moulvibazar

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Moulvibazar, known across the country for its tea gardens, is now discussing a new possibility: coffee cultivation. Interest in growing a crop quite different from tea in this famed tea district has sparked conversation in the local farming community.

Moulvibazar's identity is built mainly around the tea industry. The tea gardens spread across large parts of the district are deeply woven into its economy, employment and culture. Against that familiar backdrop, the prospect of coffee farming has given fresh importance to the question of diversifying local agriculture.

Coffee is a popular beverage crop around the world. Although there is demand for coffee in Bangladesh, its cultivation in the country is still limited. If coffee farming succeeds in an agriculture-rich district like Moulvibazar, it could open a new source of income for local farmers, according to those concerned.

The climate, soil and water availability of an area play a major role in the success of any new crop. Moulvibazar is a district of hills and plains with a long experience of tea cultivation, and that experience is being seen as a major asset in assessing the potential for coffee.

A new crop means new learning and new investment. Seedling collection, care, processing of the harvest and marketing — every stage requires preparation. As interest in coffee farming grows, the need to train and guide farmers on these matters will also come to the fore.

If another cash crop is added alongside tea, the district's agricultural economy could become more diverse. In particular, alternative income sources for small and marginal farmers could have a positive effect on the rural economy.

However, turning possibility into real success will require trial cultivation in the field, yield verification and market analysis to be carried forward seriously. How far coffee farming ultimately spreads in Moulvibazar will depend on these preparations and on the response of farmers.

For now, the discussion that has begun around coffee in the tea town signals fresh thinking in local agriculture. More details about the progress of this initiative are expected in the coming days.
