Liverpool Fight Back From Two Down to Beat Villarreal 4-3 as Mac Allister Scores Twice

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Liverpool served up an unforgettable night at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League. On Tuesday night (20 October), the English club fell two goals behind against Spanish side Villarreal but fought back to claim a dramatic 4-3 victory. The seven-goal thriller took the home crowd on a full emotional ride, from despair to delight.

The start was a nightmare for Liverpool. In only the fourth minute, Georges Mikautadze scored to put Villarreal ahead. Before the Anfield crowd had properly settled into their seats, the away supporters' celebrations had silenced the stands.

Before Liverpool could recover from that blow came a second one. In the 29th minute, Sergi Cardona doubled Villarreal's lead. Trailing 2-0 at home in a Champions League match was a mountain of pressure for the hosts — a start that would test any side.

But the hosts signalled a fightback before the break. In the 36th minute, Alexis Mac Allister headed in to pull one back, reducing the deficit to 2-1. That goal wove the first thread of the turnaround.

The equaliser arrived in first-half stoppage time, at 45+2 minutes. Ronald Araujo headed home from a Rio Ngumoha cross. The teams went into the interval level at 2-2, and Anfield had found its belief again.

Liverpool sharpened their attack further in the second half. Their possession and pressure pushed Villarreal's defence deeper and deeper. The reward came in the 65th minute.

After a brilliant individual effort by Ngumoha, Mac Allister scored his second of the night to put Liverpool 3-2 ahead. The Argentine midfielder's brace was the heartbeat of the comeback.

Three minutes later, in the 68th minute, Florian Wirtz made it 4-2. At that point the match seemed decided, and celebrations had already begun around Anfield.

But Villarreal refused to give up. Tani Oluwaseyi's goal in the 87th minute gave the visitors renewed hope of a fightback, bringing the score to 4-3. The final minutes were suddenly tense again.

In the end, though, Villarreal could not find an equaliser. At the final whistle Liverpool left the field with a 4-3 win, and the stands echoed with a mixture of relief and joy.

The victory was Liverpool's third straight win in the Champions League. The mental strength shown in winning from two goals down will be a major source of confidence for the matches ahead, while Villarreal return empty-handed despite their fight, left with only frustration.
