Two Fined Tk 100,000 for Cutting Hills in Sylhet

Staff Reporter

Two people have been fined Tk 100,000 in Sylhet on charges of cutting hills. The administrative action against this long-running pattern of environmental destruction has drawn local attention.

According to the report, the two accused were cutting a hill in the Sylhet area and damaging the environment. After the matter came to notice, the authorities concerned took action against them and imposed the fine.

Cutting hills and hillocks is a long-standing environmental problem in the Sylhet region. Illegal cutting for soil and stone raises the risk of landslides and destroys the natural balance.

In past monsoon seasons, hill collapses in Sylhet and other hilly areas of the country have also caused loss of life. Conscious citizens therefore consider fines and legal action against hill cutting essential for protecting the environment.

The fine is also being seen as a warning to others. Cutting a hill without permission is a punishable offence under the law, and similar action may be taken against anyone involved in such work.

Environmentally conscious local people say that alongside fines, regular monitoring and awareness are needed to stop hill cutting. Otherwise the work could continue in secret even after punishment.

Keeping hills and hillocks intact is essential to protect Sylhet’s natural beauty and environment. The administration’s step is being considered a practical initiative toward that goal.

Readers will be informed if any further legal action or drive on this matter is reported.
