Eight new dengue cases in Sylhet in 24 hours, no deaths
Eight people were newly infected with dengue in Sylhet in the last 24 hours. However, no deaths from dengue were reported during this period. The information came from the latest figures released on Thursday (22 October).
Although eight new cases were recorded in a single day, the absence of any death brought a measure of relief. In this dengue season, the daily count of new patients has become the main indicator for understanding the health situation in the division.
This post-monsoon period usually raises concerns about dengue outbreaks across the country, and Sylhet Division is no exception. New patients being detected every day means the spread of Aedes mosquitoes has not yet been fully brought under control.
Doctors have repeatedly said the most effective way to prevent dengue is to destroy mosquito breeding sites. Aedes mosquitoes breed in standing water around homes — in flower pots, old tyres or open containers.
Health experts also advise seeking medical advice quickly if fever appears, rather than neglecting it. Especially if fever is accompanied by body aches, pain behind the eyes or reddish spots on the skin, testing without delay is essential.
Doctors have also warned that taking painkillers on one's own can be risky for dengue patients. Adequate fluids and rest are an important part of dengue treatment.
Although eight new cases were reported in Sylhet, with no deaths the situation still appears to be under control, according to those concerned. But everyone is stressing mosquito control and public awareness so that the number of cases does not rise further.
Attention will now be on which way the case numbers move in the coming days. The daily figures will show whether the dengue situation in Sylhet is improving or whether it is time to be even more careful.
