New Prospects for Vegetable and Citrus Exports from Sylhet as Cold Storage Initiative Moves Ahead

Staff Reporter

New possibilities have emerged for exporting vegetables and citrus fruits from Sylhet. To make use of that potential, an initiative has been taken to build a cold storage facility in Sylhet, it has been learned. Stakeholders expect that once storage facilities are in place, seasonal vegetables and fruit will reach the market instead of being wasted.

Various kinds of vegetables are grown across Sylhet Division, and the region is also known for its citrus fruits. Even in a good harvest, a lack of storage often forces farmers to sell their produce in a hurry at low prices. A cold storage facility would ease that pressure and create room for planned selling.

Storage is a major condition for exports. Vegetables and fruit are perishable, so temperature must be controlled from collection until the produce reaches its destination. Cold storage works as the first step in that chain, where goods can be kept temporarily according to grade and quality.

The initiative to build a cold storage in Sylhet is therefore not just news of a building going up. Tied to it are questions of fair prices for farmers, stable supply in the market and a stronger presence for Sylhet's produce abroad. If implemented, it could change all three.

The same logic applies to storing citrus fruit. When large volumes arrive in the market at once during the season, prices fall, while the same fruit becomes hard to find once the season ends. Storing it at controlled temperatures can significantly smooth out that fluctuation in supply.

Maintaining quality is the biggest challenge in any export-oriented initiative. Sending produce to international markets requires meeting set standards of size, quality and packaging. Storage facilities are an important part of that preparation, because properly stored produce keeps its quality to the end.

From the farmer's point of view, storage facilities mean somewhat less dependence on the market's immediate mood. Without the compulsion to sell on the very day of harvest, farmers can decide by reading the market. That can also reduce dependence on middlemen.

The Sylhet region has a large expatriate population, and demand for Bangladeshi vegetables and fruit in foreign markets through expatriates is already a familiar phenomenon. If storage and export systems are linked to that demand, new doors could open for local producers.

There is, however, a difference between announcing an initiative and implementing it. A cold storage will truly serve its purpose only when construction is finished, equipment is installed and regular operations are in place. Local farmers and traders will therefore be watching the progress of this initiative.

For now, the possibility of vegetable and citrus exports from Sylhet and the move to build a cold storage are the core of this story. Once details of implementation emerge, a clearer picture will form of its impact, and it will then be possible to judge how much change this initiative can bring to Sylhet's agricultural economy.
