Road Crash Breaks His Leg and Halts HSC Candidate Mizanur's Studies, He Goes Door to Door Seeking Help

Staff Reporter

A single road accident changed college student Md Mizanur Rahman's life in a moment. At an age when he should be dreaming with books in hand, he is instead facing life's harsh reality. Treatment, a return to normal life, and uncertainty over continuing his studies now pursue Mizanur every day.

Mizanur is the son of Md Dulal Sarkar of Athail Shimul village in Lokerpara Union of Ghatail, Tangail. He is an HSC candidate at Bhuanpur Moniruzzaman BM College. One accident has thrown his examination, his studies and his family's dreams into uncertainty.

Because of the accident, Mizanur could not sit for the last HSC examination. His father farms to support a six-member family. For this low-income family, meeting the cost of long-term treatment is becoming harder by the day.

Mizanur said that, to help his parents, he worked alongside his studies as a pickup van driver's assistant. On the morning of 3 July, in Dhaka's Khilkhet area, the pickup driver fell asleep and rammed into the back of a bus. Mizanur's left leg was broken in the crash.

Local people rescued him and admitted him to Kurmitola General Hospital. After initial treatment there, he was admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital. Later, with borrowed money, a rod was inserted into his leg through surgery at a private hospital. He has still not fully recovered.

Mizanur said: 'My family is very weak financially. I have gone door to door to public representatives and political leaders for a little help. I have received no financial assistance from anywhere. I am seeking government and private support to return to normal life. I want to recover and fulfil my parents' dreams. I want to support them in every way.'

His father, Md Dulal Sarkar, said: 'I run my family with great difficulty. I treated my son with my savings and loans. All together, it is very hard for all members of my family to get by. Government and private financial help would benefit us greatly.'

Al Amin, convener of the Tangail district anti-discrimination student movement, said: 'Mizanur Rahman may have had many dreams before, hopes of establishing himself through education. One accident seems to have turned everything upside down. Alongside physical pain, he now has to fight financial crisis and an uncertain future.'

He added that when a family's means are limited, long-term treatment is essential. In his words, physical limitation on one side and anxiety over treatment costs on the other — standing beside a student like him in such a situation is not only a humanitarian duty, it is also an effort to protect a future. He said help is needed from every level.

Attempts were made several times to reach Tangail BRTA Assistant Director Engineer Sheikh Mahatab Uddin Ahmed on his mobile phone for comment, but he could not be reached. As a result, no statement from the authorities on the existing support process for road-crash victims could be included in this report.

Mizanur's story is not only news of one student's accident; it also reflects the risky lives of countless students who are forced to work for their families alongside their studies. Injured while working, his return to education now depends on treatment and support.

Mizanur and his family now have one hope — that with government and private help he can recover, return to his studies, sit for the HSC examination, and move forward towards fulfilling his parents' dreams. The family is waiting to see when that help arrives.
