Jamaat Leader Mujibur Rahman's WhatsApp Account Hacked; Party Warns Against Any Financial Transactions

Staff Reporter

The personal WhatsApp account of Professor Mujibur Rahman, Naib-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been hacked. The party has urged everyone concerned to remain highly alert and not to carry out any financial transaction based on any message sent from that account.

The matter was announced on Saturday in an official statement signed by Mujibul Alam, senior publicity assistant of the party's central publicity department.

The statement said a dishonest group had illegally taken control of the WhatsApp ID used by Professor Mujibur Rahman MP. In other words, the account is no longer under his own control, and someone else could use it to send messages.

In this situation, the party has advised all his well-wishers, colleagues and members of the public not to be misled. It requested that any unexpected request or message arriving from that number or account be ignored.

The statement placed the strongest emphasis on money: under no circumstances should anyone transfer funds on the basis of a message from that account. Hacked accounts are commonly used to ask contacts for money in the name of an emergency — the very risk reflected in the party's warning.

Professor Mujibur Rahman is a Naib-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and a member of parliament. Because the hacking of a national political leader and public representative's personal communication account can create confusion and opportunities for fraud among his contacts, the party moved quickly to alert everyone through a statement.

When a WhatsApp account is hacked, messages sent from it appear to recipients as if they came from the real person. Relatives, colleagues or well-wishers who respond to a request without verifying it can suffer financial loss — staying alert is the most effective protection in such cases.

The party's statement did not report any progress yet on recovering the account. If the account is regained, that is expected to be announced formally; until then, the party has advised treating every message from that number with suspicion.

The incident has also brought the question of account security for public representatives and well-known figures back into focus. Verifying unusual requests through another channel of contact, and confirming before sending any money, are the basic precautions that protect against this kind of fraud.

For now, the party's warning is the latest official information on the incident. Anyone who receives a suspicious message or a request for money from that WhatsApp account has been advised to ignore it and, if necessary, contact the party office.
