BGB Seizes Indian Cloth Worth Tk 90 Lakh Brought by Boat on Jamalpur Border

Staff Reporter

Border Guard Bangladesh — 35 BGB — has seized Indian than cloth worth Tk 90,64,000 in a special operation on the Indian border in Jamalpur. The large consignment, being smuggled in by boat, was detained in the border area itself. Jamalpur-35 BGB confirmed the matter in a press release on Saturday afternoon.

According to BGB sources, members of the Saheber Alga BOP under Jamalpur-35 BGB seized the cloth consignment at around 11pm on Friday, 23 October. The entire consignment came into BGB hands in that night operation.

The operation was based on specific information. The BGB learned that Indian than cloth of various brands was being smuggled into Bangladesh by boat through a place called Mekuralga near border pillar 1047 on the Indian border.

Acting on that information, members of the Saheber Alga BOP of Jamalpur-35 BGB conducted the operation there. The operation site was the Mekuralga area near the border pillar, through which the consignment was being brought by boat.

The operation seized 4,272 metres of Indian than cloth. Seizing such a large quantity of cloth at once also gives an idea of the size of the consignment.

Alongside the cloth, one boat was also seized. The BGB detained the very boat that had been used to bring the consignment.

The estimated market value of the seized cloth is Tk 90,64,000. Stopping a consignment worth close to a crore of taka has foiled a major smuggling attempt.

However, no one could be arrested in this operation. The BGB release said those involved with the consignment were not caught.

On Saturday morning, legal action was taken by the BGB over the incident. The next process concerning the seized cloth and boat will proceed through that action.

On the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, commander of Jamalpur-35 BGB, said a huge quantity of Indian than cloth had been seized in the border operation. His remarks underlined the scale of the operation's success.

The commander also said, 'Alongside regular patrols, we have continued anti-smuggling and anti-drug operations.' In other words, this operation is not isolated — both patrols and operations remain ongoing.

Although the smugglers used a boat to bring cloth across the border, the BGB was able to detain the consignment by acting on information. Attention will now be on completion of the legal process over the seized goods.
