Shilpa Rao's microphone cut off mid-performance in Mumbai; angry fans, organisers apologise
Popular singer Shilpa Rao's microphone was switched off in the middle of her performance on stage. The singer, famed for the song "Besharam Rang", faced the situation on Saturday (24 October) at the Bollywood Music Project event in Mumbai. The singer herself and her fans expressed anger over the incident, and the organisers eventually expressed regret and apologised.
Shilpa's microphone and electronic audio equipment were reportedly switched off while her performance continued beyond the scheduled time. As she was trying to thank the audience and say goodbye, another artist, Kutle Khan, began his performance, leaving her farewell remarks unfinished.
Shilpa Rao issued a statement expressing her hurt, saying a small part of her heart had broken that night in Mumbai and that such a beautiful moment being snatched away had deeply pained her. Music stopped, she said, but the audience did not — they kept calling her name, and that love was extraordinary. The story of that night remained unfinished, but she promised to return.
As soon as the incident became public, it drew a strong reaction on social media. Audience members at the festival and the singer's fans criticised the organisers for mismanagement and for disrespectful treatment of an experienced artist.
Angry audience members alleged that the event had fallen about 45 minutes behind schedule, so the time allotted to performers was cut. Fans launched a social media campaign under the hashtag "Justice for Shilpa Rao".
One audience member wrote that it was the worst management: Shilpa's performance was abruptly stopped when Kutle Khan's set began, and the organisers switched off her microphone mid-performance. The production and organisation were appalling, the post said, adding the hope that no other artist would face such an experience. Many expressed similar anger on Instagram; some called the incident disrespectful, others questioned the event's time management.
As discussion continued on social media, the organisers expressed regret. In a statement they said they were deeply sorry that Shilpa Rao's full performance could not be presented to the audience, that they hold her in deep respect, and that having her in the event's artist line-up was an honour for them.
Explaining the cause, the statement said several performances earlier in the event had run longer than scheduled, disrupting the whole programme timetable. In addition, being bound by local administration directives and the venue's fixed time limits, it was not possible to adjust timings and extend Shilpa's performance.
The organisers also apologised to Shilpa Rao, her team and her fans, acknowledging that everyone involved was disappointed by the incident. At the same time, they cited the many operational challenges involved in staging a large-scale live music festival.
The abrupt mid-performance stoppage of an established artist has raised serious questions about time management at live events. After the fans' anger and the organisers' apology, it remains to be seen how carefully future events protect the time allotted to performers.
