Auto-Rickshaw Driver Abdul Haque Hacked to Death in Feni's Chhagalnaiya, No Arrest Two Days After Case Filed

Staff Reporter

A case has been filed over the killing of auto-rickshaw driver Abdul Haque (45) and the snatching of his auto-rickshaw in Chhagalnaiya, Feni. However, police have not been able to arrest anyone even though two days have passed since the incident.

Chhagalnaiya police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Abu Taher confirmed the information on Sunday (25 October) night. Earlier, on Friday night, miscreants hacked Abdul Haque in the Banglabazar area of the upazila and took away his auto-rickshaw. He died while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital early on Saturday.

Abdul Haque was the son of Osman Hawlader of Matiagoda village in Mahamaya union of the upazila. He had bought the auto-rickshaw for about 150,000 taka through loans and instalments. He supported his five-member family, including two sons and a daughter, by driving that auto-rickshaw. With his death, the family has lost its only means of income.

Residents of the deceased's area have demanded the speedy arrest of those involved in the killing. Mahamaya union BNP convener Fazlul Karim Liton has warned that if those involved are not arrested within the next week, programmes including a human chain will be announced.

Fazlul Karim Liton said the deceased Abdul Haque was an innocent and honest man of the area. Those who killed him must be arrested within the next week, otherwise programmes including a human chain will be announced. He added that if the administration cannot identify those involved in the killing of an innocent man, it is not possible to run the country with such an administration.

OC Md Abu Taher said Abdul Haque's wife Hasina Akter filed a murder case as the complainant. One person was detained and interrogated on suspicion of involvement, but no connection was found in the interrogation. Several more suspects in the incident are on the police list and police are working to arrest them.
