Comilla: Comilla University is building a modern 'Assembly Point' on the hill beside its open stage, the Mukto Mancha. The administration is developing it as an attractive place for students to gather, spend leisure time and take group photographs together.

On Monday (26 October) at noon, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M M Sharifful Karim announced that allocation and approval for building the Assembly Point had been received from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

According to the engineering office, a master plan of about Tk 80 lakh has been adopted to make the campus more aesthetic and student-friendly. In its first phase, the top of the hill will be developed as the Assembly Point. Tk 15 lakh in allocation and approval has been received from the UGC for this work.

Plans for the Assembly Point include seating for students, construction of stairs, landscaping and a food hub. Those concerned said the place will become a centre for students to gather, take group photographs, hold batch-based events and come together for student organisation activities.

A distinctive signage will be one of the main attractions of the Assembly Point, carrying the university's identity and philosophy. It will bear four words — 'Learn, Create, Connect and Lead' — reflecting the university's mission and vision. Those concerned hope the aesthetically designed signage will present the university's distinct identity and also play a role in branding nationally and internationally.

Beside the Assembly Point, below the Arts Faculty, there is also a plan for a full food hub with six stalls. In front of it, an environment suitable for students to sit, study in groups and spend leisure time will be created.

Supervising Engineer S M Shahidul Hasan of the engineering office said that after the first phase is completed, the Assembly Point will be expanded in the second and third phases, when a full food hub with six stalls will be built. Under the master plan, the place where the university's blue buses are kept will also be brought under landscaping and beautification, he said.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M M Sharifful Karim said that since taking charge he has prioritised a 'Student First' policy and worked for student welfare, increased facilities and a learning-friendly, vibrant campus. A master plan covers the area from the blue bus parking place beside the Mukto Mancha to below the Arts Faculty, and approval from the UGC for the Assembly Point has been received as its first step.

The vice-chancellor also said the remaining development work of the master plan will be implemented in phases subject to necessary approvals and allocations. He said these initiatives will be implemented gradually with the cooperation of all teachers, students, officers and employees of the university.
