Mbappe double gives Real Madrid a 2-1 El Clasico win over Barcelona at Camp Nou

Staff Reporter

A Kylian Mbappe double gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Barcelona in El Clasico. Sunday night's victory at Camp Nou was Real's fifth straight win across all competitions.

Jose Mourinho's side were far from the favourites when the action kicked off. But after 90 minutes of drama and fiery football, Real had the last laugh, silencing the tens of thousands of Barcelona supporters at Camp Nou.

Mbappe's brace took his tally to 14 goals this season. It also brought up his 100th goal for Real across all competitions since joining in 2024 from PSG.

With that, Los Blancos became the first side to beat Barcelona in the league this season, ending the Catalan club's nine-game winning streak in the top flight. Had Barcelona won, they would have broken Real's 1968-69 record for a best-ever start in the Spanish top flight.

It was also a second straight defeat for Hansi Flick's side, coming only days after they fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Victory also moved Real ahead in the all-time Clasico head-to-head record, with 107 wins to Barcelona's 106.

After 10 matches, Real are third in the league standings on 24 points, three points behind Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid are second with 25 points.

Defeats to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month shook Real's top-flight campaign, but they have now won five matches in a row — three in La Liga and two in the Champions League.

After two seasons without trophies, Real turned to old boss Mourinho to stop Barcelona's dominance. Thirteen years after his first spell at Real ended, his return to the Clasico brought a victory that made an immediate statement.

After celebrating with his trademark knee slide, the 63-year-old manager knows his job is far from over. In his words, Madrid are not playing to win at Camp Nou; they are playing to win the championship.

The brace came a day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. Last campaign Mbappe finished as La Liga and the Champions League's top scorer, won the World Cup Golden Boot and became the all-time leading World Cup scorer, statistics that have made him one of the frontrunners for the award.
