The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found evidence that Rezaul Alam Shahin, brother-in-law of former Special Branch chief and former additional inspector general of police Md Monirul Islam, and Shahin's wife Sanjida Khanam Tumpa acquired and held assets inconsistent with their known sources of income totalling about Tk 38.62 crore.

According to the ACC inquiry, the inconsistent assets in Shahin's name amount to Tk 23,32,46,526, and those in Tumpa's name to Tk 15,30,21,059.

The ACC inquiry team found the involvement of additional IGP Monirul Islam and his wife Sayla Farzana, a former additional secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, with this large amount of illegal wealth. For that reason, the ACC has decided to file two separate cases accusing the Monirul couple along with the brother-in-law and his wife.

ACC deputy director and head of the inquiry team Mozammil Hossain said the two cases were approved on Monday (26 October).

In the two cases, charges have been brought under section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, and section 109 of the Penal Code.

According to the case allegations, information was found of abnormal and suspicious transactions worth Tk 1,045,28,30,738 in Shahin's 40 bank accounts between 8 December 2013 and 16 April 2024.

In the same period, Tk 527,92,88,828 was deposited into those accounts and Tk 517,35,41,910 was withdrawn. The ACC alleges Shahin acquired these assets and carried out these transactions as part of an attempt to legitimise money earned through bribery, corruption and abuse of power.

In this incident, it has also been decided to accuse Shahin's sister Sayla Farzana and her husband, former additional IGP Monirul Islam. Sayla Farzana was a former additional secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.

Meanwhile, in Tumpa's 27 bank accounts, Tk 33,10,55,788 was deposited and Tk 25,51,98,555 was withdrawn between 8 December 2013 and 4 February 2024. The total transactions in these accounts amount to Tk 58,62,54,343.

The ACC alleges that assets were acquired and bank transactions carried out in Tumpa's name as part of an attempt to legitimise money earned by her husband Shahin, his sister Sayla Farzana and his brother-in-law Monirul Islam through bribery, corruption and abuse of power. It has been decided to accuse Tumpa, Shahin, Sayla Farzana and Monirul Islam in this case.
