Fire erupts from underground while digging a tube well at Inani in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar; three fire service units at work

Staff Reporter

A coil of fire was seen while digging the ground to install a tube well at Inani, a tourist area of Ukhia in Cox's Bazar. Gas-smelling smoke was also coming out, leading to a suspicion that natural gas underground may have caused the incident.

The incident took place at about 8:30am on Tuesday (October 27) in the area next to the small bridge at Inani. The fire was still burning at the site when this report was written.

Three fire service units are working at the scene to bring the situation under control. The units reached the spot after receiving the news.

Ukhia Fire Service Station Officer Saidul Islam confirmed the matter. He said they had come to the scene after receiving the news and the fire was still burning. It is initially believed that gas underground may have created the situation.

The continuing fire has spread panic among local residents. Alamin, a local youth working at a nearby five-star hotel, said he and several other hotel workers live in the house right next to where the fire started. The fire service had arrived, he said, adding that he was very frightened to suddenly see the fire.

Fearing that the fire could spread through the wires of an electric pole, the Ukhia Palli Bidyut Samity said electricity supply has been temporarily suspended along about 15 kilometres of the 33 kV line from Monkhali to Patuartek.
