Winter is still a few weeks away, but the northern district of Panchagarh is already feeling the touch of cold. On Tuesday (27 October) at 9am, the lowest temperature recorded in the district's Tetulia was 15.4 degrees Celsius.

The days remain bright with sunshine, but a wintry mood sets in after evening. Fog thickens as the night passes into dawn, and the district's weather is changing through this contrast between day and night temperatures.

According to the Tetulia weather office, humidity stood at 99 per cent when the 15.4 degrees Celsius was recorded at 9am on Tuesday. Earlier, at 6am, the temperature there was 15.7 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, the district's highest temperature on Monday, recorded at 3pm, was 33.1 degrees Celsius — meaning the gap between day and night temperatures has reached nearly 18 degrees Celsius.

Fog density increases across different parts of Panchagarh from the evening onwards. After fog falls all night, it grows denser at dawn, though it quickly thins once sunlight spreads.

Azizul Islam, an easy-bike driver in Panchagarh Sadar upazila, said the feeling of cold has been growing for several days. Mornings did not feel cold before; now he has to carry light warm clothing when he takes his vehicle out at dawn, and driving in the morning cold has become difficult, he said.

A resident of Panchagarh town said that although full winter is still 20 to 25 days away, the cold is already being felt. Riding a motorcycle in light clothing after evening has become difficult, he sleeps under a thin blanket at night, and he has kept his fan switched off for the past 10 to 15 days.

Jitendranath Roy, the acting officer of the Tetulia weather office, said the temperature is falling under the influence of winds coming from the Himalayas while the sky has remained cloud-free for the past few days, increasing the sense of winter in the district.

According to his forecast, once the effect of rain clears between 31 October and 1 November, the intensity of the cold may increase further.
