A Week Before the Midterms, Johnson Says Polls Underestimate GOP Enthusiasm and Democrats' Leftward Shift Will Drive Voters to Republicans

With a week left before the US midterm elections, House Speaker Mike Johnson has warned that Republican voter enthusiasm should not be underestimated. Despite polls showing Democrats with a national advantage, he said the Democratic Party's increasingly left-wing agenda will drive Americans toward Republicans.
Speaking on 'The Ingraham Angle' on Monday, Johnson said: 'If these Democrats took control of Congress, it would be crazier than the Obama years and the Biden-Harris years, because they've taken a far lurch to the left. And people see that, and I think it's going to juice enthusiasm for our side.'
A new Reuters-Ipsos poll found registered voters favouring Democrats over Republicans by 47 percent to 36 percent. Johnson, however, argued that the polls are misrepresentative and underestimate Republican enthusiasm.
Johnson claimed Republican voters have become increasingly unwilling to participate in polls and surveys because of distrust. He also said he will visit 21 states over the next week.
He decried the policy stances of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), with which several prominent midterm congressional candidates have affiliated themselves. He warned that their proposals to abolish borders and prisons and defund police departments would be dangerous for the country.
Johnson characterised the 2026 midterms as a 'contrast election', saying voters face a choice between 'common sense' and 'crazy'. In his words, every voter has to ask which set of policies is better for their family, their aging parents and their children.
He also said Democrats, if put in charge, would go after retribution against President Trump and his administration, open the borders wide and try to repeal the working families tax cut. He warned that a Democratic takeover of Congress would bring chaos every day for two years in the next Congress.
