Swechchhasebak Dal leader Jewel Hossain Nirab was allegedly beaten inside a room of the emergency department of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital by Chhatra Dal leader Shahed and his followers.

Video of the incident, which took place on Sunday (25 October), has spread on Facebook. The video shows Jewel being hit with a chair, punched and kicked.

Doctors and staff at the hospital are reported to be in panic over the incident. The injured Jewel has been taken to Dhaka for better treatment.

Jewel is senior vice-president of the Ward 1 unit of Lakshmipur municipality Swechchhasebak Dal. The accused Shahed is a former president of Dalal Bazar Degree College Chhatra Dal. He is a candidate for general secretary of the Ward 3 unit of Lakshmipur municipality Chhatra Dal.

Speaking to the hospital authorities and people concerned, it was learned that a fight broke out between Shahed and Jewel over a dispute about buying and selling a mobile phone. Jewel, injured in that fight, came to the hospital for treatment.

It is alleged that Shahed later went to the hospital with his followers and beat Jewel again. When Jewel entered a room of the emergency department to escape the attack, Shahed also entered there. Inside the room, Jewel was then hit with a chair as well as punched and kicked, it was learned.

Attempts to contact the accused Shahed for his comment were unsuccessful.

District Chhatra Dal convener Abul Barakat Sourav and member secretary Hasibur Rahman Abhi said Shahed had been a leader of Dalal Bazar College Chhatra Dal. He currently holds no post, though he is involved in municipal Chhatra Dal politics. Organisational action will be taken against him over this incident, they said.

Resident medical officer (RMO) of the Sadar Hospital Arup Pal said the attack at the hospital was regrettable. The attack was clearly recorded on the hospital's CCTV cameras. Police have been informed of the matter for legal action. Hospital staff are also in panic over the incident, he said.

Lakshmipur Sadar Model police station officer-in-charge Wahid Parvez said no one has filed a written complaint at the police station over the incident. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received, he said.
