Nearly Two-Hour Power Outage Hits Eastern Dhaka and Parts of Chattogram; Five-Member Committee Formed to Find Cause

Staff Reporter

A large part of eastern Dhaka and some areas of Chattogram suddenly lost power on Tuesday afternoon. Electricity supply stopped simultaneously in those areas at 12:43 p.m.

After nearly two hours, the mechanical fault was fixed and the national grid became operational again. The closed power plants are now being restarted one by one, said Power Grid Bangladesh PLC, the organisation that operates the national grid.

In a message sent in the afternoon, Power Grid Bangladesh said the restoration work of the national grid was fully completed at 2:30 p.m. All grid lines and grid substations are now in operation.

The organisation said the power plants are being restarted in phases, and that scattered load shedding will also decrease as generation increases.

Power Grid Bangladesh has formed a five-member committee to uncover the real cause of the outage and to prepare opinions and recommendations on what should be done to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

In a press release sent to the media on Tuesday evening, the organisation said the committee, led by Chief Engineer (additional charge) of Transmission-2 Syed Ebadullah Haidar Ali, has been instructed to submit its report within the next five working days.

Power Grid Bangladesh has apologised for the temporary inconvenience caused to the public by the unexpected power outage.
