Brewers rout Rays 10-1 in Game 3 to take 3-0 World Series lead
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 of the World Series. The win gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the series and moved the club a step closer to the first World Series title in franchise history.
The game turned in a huge eight-run fifth inning for Milwaukee, which seized full control in that single frame. Brewers manager Pat Murphy and outfielder Jackson Chourio were among those who reflected on the inning afterwards.
On the mound, the night belonged to Robert Gasser. He threw six shutout innings while facing the minimum number of batters, becoming the first left-handed pitcher to do so in a World Series game since Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax.
Tampa Bay's batting never got going. The Rays managed just one hit through eight innings, and a ninth-inning double by Yandy Diaz produced their only run, narrowing the score to 10-1 far too late to change the result.
Before the game, the roof of Tropicana Field was itself a topic of discussion. The stadium is hosting World Series games for the first time since 2008. Brewers star closer Trevor Megill strongly criticised the roof, telling reporters its colour is the same as the baseball and calling the design decision wrong.
Milwaukee knew from recent experience how easily the roof can come into play, having seen it affect the NLDS against the San Diego Padres. The Brewers spent significant practice time on fly balls against the roof background and on ricochets off the support system, the report said.
Game 4 is set for Tuesday night. Milwaukee will send Dustin May to the mound, while Tampa Bay will counter with bulk pitcher Griffin Jax, needing a win to keep their season alive.
The victory also extended Milwaukee's remarkable postseason run. According to the report, the Brewers stand at 11-1 in the playoffs, winning nine straight games across the NLCS and the World Series.
