Local residents in Saitalia village of Sreepur Upazila in Gazipur have caught Anwar Hossain, accused of beating his father Abdus Samad to death with a stick, and handed him over to the police. He was detained from a house in Saitalia village at around 10pm on Tuesday. He had been in hiding and had gone to a neighbour's house to charge his mobile phone.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam confirmed the matter on Tuesday night, saying local residents had caught the accused son in the father's killing case and handed him over to the police. He has been brought to the police station and will be sent to court on Wednesday, the OC said.

Tanzim Ahmed Pushpo, a relative of the deceased, said Anwar had gone into hiding after beating his father to death. Police and relatives had searched various places without finding him. At around 10pm on Tuesday, Anwar went to a neighbour's house to charge his mobile phone. Seeing him, the household informed local residents.

When the locals approached, Anwar tried to run away. He was caught, tied to a tree, and the police were informed. Police arrived and took him to the police station.

Earlier, at around 5am on Sunday (26 October), an argument broke out between Abdus Samad and his son Anwar in Saitalia village of Telihati Union in Sreepur Upazila over money for drugs and a family feud. At one point, an enraged Anwar struck his father indiscriminately on the head and chest with a stick, and Abdus Samad died on the spot. The deceased Abdus Samad was 60 years old, and the accused Anwar Hossain is 35.

Immediately after the incident, police reached the scene, prepared an inquest report on the body and collected the necessary evidence.

The victim's brother, Kamrul Islam, filed a case with Sreepur Police Station over the incident. The accused Anwar had been absconding since the case was filed.

Anwar's two days in hiding ended when local residents caught him on Tuesday night. Police say he will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
