Trump claims his backing turned Netanyahu's election fortunes around, in Truth Social post
US President Donald Trump has claimed that his support played a major role in changing the election fortunes of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to him, although many had viewed Netanyahu's latest election result as a certain defeat, after his backing it has now taken the shape of a possible victory.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday (28 October), Trump made the claim while sharing a statement by Irving C. Schwartz.
In that statement, Schwartz wrote that when President Trump endorsed Netanyahu, the entire political tide turned. He also noted that what had once seemed a decisive defeat for the Israeli prime minister now looks like a major comeback draw, and even a win for Netanyahu.
The closing part of the post praised Trump's political goodwill, saying he wants only the good of the Middle East, Israel and the United States.
Voting in Israel's national election was held on Tuesday. Vote counting began on Wednesday. Results from various exit polls point to a highly competitive political situation. Although Prime Minister Netanyahu's Likud party is ahead in the count, uncertainty remains over whether it will be possible to form a government.
As Netanyahu, a long-time political ally, fights to hold on to power in this fiercely contested election, Trump's comment has made the US president's open support for him even clearer. However, the post mentioned no specific evidence as to whether Trump's support directly influenced voters.
