Attempt to traffic two women visiting Sylhet shrine to India, Ramim arrested at Darbasta Bazar in Jaintapur
Two women who came to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet were allegedly lured with offers of high-paying jobs in an attempt to traffic them to India. The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested a young man named Md Ramim Ahmed (23) in the incident.
He was arrested on Tuesday (October 27) evening from the Darbasta Bazar area of Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet. Ramim is the son of Kalim Ullah of the same area.
The SRB-9 gave the information in a press release sent to the media on Wednesday (October 28) morning. In the release, the battalion's media officer, Additional Superintendent of Police K. M. Shahidul Islam Sohag, presented the details of the incident.
According to the release, the victim Sagorika Begum (39) is a resident of Bahirgram in Narail Sadar upazila. On the morning of October 8, she came to Sylhet to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA). There she met another woman named Anasrin Begum. The two then decided to visit Jaflong together.
For that purpose, they boarded Ramim Ahmed's microbus in front of the shrine for a fare of 400 taka. According to the allegation, as soon as they got into the vehicle, Ramim offered them high-paying jobs in India. When they did not agree, they were intimidated.
At one stage, at around 11:30 pm, the two women were taken to the Dibor Haor Shapla Beel area of Nijpat Union in Jaintapur upazila. There, with the help of Hanif Mia and seven to eight other unidentified people, they were lured and pressured to go to India, the press release said.
The release said that, realising the accused persons' dishonest intent and fearing trafficking to India, the two women tactfully escaped from the spot. Sagorika Begum later filed a case with Jaintapur police station as the plaintiff.
SRB-9 media officer Additional Superintendent of Police K. M. Shahidul Islam Sohag said the SRB began a shadow investigation after the case was filed. Later, acting on secret information, an SRB team raided the Darbasta Bazar area on Tuesday evening and arrested Ramim Ahmed.
After the arrest, Ramim Ahmed was handed over to Jaintapur police station, the release said.
