Jagannath University Chhatra Dal Leader Jobayed Murder Case: Charge-Framing Hearing Deferred to 8 November

Staff Reporter

The charge-framing hearing in the murder case of Jobayed Hossain, a Jagannath University (JnU) student and a member of the branch Chhatra Dal convening committee, has been deferred to 8 November.

On Wednesday (28 October), acting judge Mazharul Islam of Dhaka's 20th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court gave the defence time for the last time and set the next date for the hearing.

The court's bench assistant Majedul Islam confirmed the matter and said the day had been set for the charge-framing hearing in the case. However, time was sought on behalf of accused Barjis Shabnam Barsha and her boyfriend Md Mahir Rahman. The reason given was that the lawyers did not have adequate preparation for the hearing and the senior lawyers are outside the country. The court gave time for the last time and set the hearing for 8 November.

The three accused in this case are in jail. They were produced before the court on the day. The charge-framing hearing had been deferred twice before.

Earlier, on 30 June, police submitted a charge sheet accusing three people, including Barsha, after completing the investigation of the case. Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Ashraf Hossain of Banshal Police Station submitted the charge sheet. The other accused are Barsha's boyfriend Md Mahir Rahman and Mahir's friend Fardeen Ahmed Aylan. The charge sheet states that all three gave confessional statements in court admitting responsibility for the murder.

According to the charge sheet, the victim Md Jobayed Hossain (25) was a student of the 15th batch of the 2019-20 academic session of Jagannath University's Statistics Department. He did tuition to earn a living and had long taught at accused Barsha's home as a private tutor.

According to the case allegation, on 19 October 2025 at around 4:30pm, Jobayed went to teach at Roushan Villa, holding number 15 of Nur Box Lane in Ward 31 under Banshal Police Station. His bloodied body was later found on the stairs of the third floor of that building.

Over the incident, on 21 October, Jobayed's brother Enayet Hossain Saikat filed a murder case with Banshal Police Station in the capital as the complainant. After the autopsy, Jobayed was buried on 20 October at Krishnapur village in Cumilla.
