Argentina's government has confirmed that Brazil's far-right senator Flavio Bolsonaro crossed the border into the country. The Guardian reported the information on Wednesday. Bolsonaro left Brazil after losing Sunday's presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

According to the Argentine government, Flavio Bolsonaro entered Argentina with his wife and two daughters. At 11:30pm on Tuesday they boarded a private plane bound for Ecuador and departed.

Argentina's National Migration Directorate said on the X platform that they entered the country with valid travel documents and that there was no legal obstacle to their entry. The agency added that their journey was completed without any trouble under the supervision of the appropriate authorities.

The migration directorate said the flight was operated by a company called Byres Fly SA. Its destination was Guayaquil in Ecuador, located 260 kilometres southwest of the capital, Quito.

The Bolsonaro family entered the country through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge border in Argentina's Misiones province, according to the directorate.

Earlier, the news website Metropoles, citing people close to the family, had reported that Flavio was on his way to the United States. His aides told Metropoles he would arrive in Florida on Tuesday afternoon and planned to apply for political asylum there. The aides also claimed the Donald Trump administration had been informed.

President Lula strongly condemned Flavio Bolsonaro's departure at an event. He said that for the Bolsonaro family Brazil is a second motherland, while their first motherland is flattering the United States.

Lula also asked what the conscience of a citizen who loses an election and flees the country says. In his words, someone who has committed no crime fears no one; a citizen who leaves the country in secret surely has some crime. He called the act of leaving Brazil deeply shameful.
