Police have arrested expelled Chhatra Dal leader Abdur Rahman Shahed in the case over the beating of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Jewel Hossain Nirab inside Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. District detective police arrested him from Uttar Temuhni at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday (27 October).

Additional Superintendent of Police (administration and finance) Hosain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi confirmed the arrest at around midnight. He said the main suspect in the case had been arrested and legal action was being taken against him.

Shahed is the son of Firoz Alam of Bancha Nagar in Ward 3 of Lakshmipur municipality. He is a twelfth-grade student at Dalalbazar Degree College and was the convenor of the college unit of Chhatra Dal.

The victim, Jewel Hossain Nirab, is the senior vice-president of the Ward 1 Swechchhasebak Dal in Lakshmipur municipality and the son of Md Shahjahan of the Sahapur area.

Shahed was relieved of his Chhatra Dal position on Monday evening (26 October) over the beating of Jewel. The same night, Jewel's father Shahjahan filed a case at Sadar Model police station naming 11 people including Shahed, with eight other unnamed suspects.

The case statement says a dispute arose between Jewel and Shahed over the buying and selling of a mobile phone. A meeting was held over the matter in the Sahapur area on Sunday night, where, according to the statement, the accused attacked Jewel carrying local weapons and beat him with sticks.

According to the statement, when Jewel then went to the emergency department of Sadar Hospital for treatment at around 12:30 a.m., he was attacked again under Shahed's leadership. The accused are also said to have vandalised hospital furniture. Jewel was later sent to Noakhali General Hospital for advanced treatment.
