Magura: Former OC Biplob and SI Ismail Arrested in BNP Leader Moshiar Rahman Killing Case, Sent to Jail by Court

Magura District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested former officer-in-charge (OC) Biplob Kumar Nath and Sub-Inspector (SI) Ismail Hossain in the murder case over BNP leader Moshiar Rahman, who was killed in police firing in Shalikha, Magura.
Magura DB Inspector Kamruzzaman confirmed the arrests. Before his arrest, Biplob Kumar Nath was serving with the Mongla Tourist Police in the Sundarbans zone, and Magura DB police arrested him from Barishal. The two were arrested late on Tuesday night (27 October).
When they were produced before the Shalikha Cognizance Court in Magura on Wednesday evening (28 October), Judge Barnali Rani rejected their bail applications and ordered them sent to jail.
They are FIR-named accused in the murder case of Shalikha upazila BNP leader Moshiar Rahman.
The investigating officer, Police Inspector Md Kamruzzaman, said according to the case statement that on 15 February 2015, the then Shalikha OC Biplob Kumar Nath and SI Ismail Hossain picked up Moshiar Rahman from his home. Moshiar, a resident of Chhoyghoria village, was vice-president of Ward No. 1 BNP in Shothkhali Union of Shalikha upazila. He was later shot dead.
At the time, the killing was presented as a 'crossfire' incident and a case was filed at Shalikha police station.
The victim's wife, Hasina Begum, filed the murder case in court on 1 October 2024. Former OC Biplob Kumar Nath and SI Ismail Hossain were among several people accused in the case.
The court ordered Shalikha police station to treat the case as an FIR and take necessary legal action. An investigation into the case then began.
Investigating officer Md Kamruzzaman said important information was obtained from the accused during initial interrogation after their arrest, but he did not disclose details for the sake of the investigation.
Local sources and the victim's family say that during the previous Awami League government, while serving in districts including Magura, Kushtia, Jhenaidah and Meherpur, the two police officers faced allegations of killing many BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists in the name of crossfire and of extorting money by threatening crossfire.
Police sources said former OC Biplob Kumar Nath is the son-in-law of Mohit Kumar Nath, president of Jashore Sadar upazila Awami League.
The arrest of the two police officers and the court order sending them to jail mark new progress in the investigation into this killing from long ago.
