Three Goals in the Final 10 Minutes: Miami Escape Defeat Against Cincinnati with 90th-Minute Equalizer in 2-2 Draw
The match between Inter Miami and FC Cincinnati stayed goalless until the 60th minute. Lionel Messi's team then took the lead but could not hold it. Three goals came in a dramatic final 10 minutes, and the last of them, in the 90th minute, saved Miami from defeat. The match ended 2-2.
Luis Suárez broke the deadlock in the 61st minute to put Miami ahead, but the lead did not prove enough.
Kenji Mboma Dem equalized for Cincinnati in the 80th minute, and about six minutes later Samuel Gidi scored to put Cincinnati in front and stun Miami.
But the drama was not over. In the final minute of regulation time, the 90th, Riquelme Fillipi curled a shot from the left side of the box into the far post. It was Fillipi's first goal in Major League Soccer (MLS), and it saved Miami from defeat. Suárez had scored from almost the same spot.
Messi finished the match without a goal or an assist, and his team did not win either. It was his second match since returning from Spain, where he received the Princess of Asturias Award from the royal family for his contribution to sport.
In the first match back, the travel-weary Argentine star had come on as a second-half substitute. He finished that match without a goal or assist as well, and the New York Red Bulls beat Miami 2-0.
After this draw, second-placed New England in the MLS Eastern Conference stand on 58 points, two more than third-placed Miami. Both teams have two matches left to play.
Miami's next match is away to the New England Revolution. The result will not only decide the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference but could also play a big role in securing the No. 2 seed in the MLS Cup playoffs.
