Rail communication between Dhaka and northern Bengal, disrupted after a bogie of the Nilsagar Express derailed in the Mahera railway station area of Mirzapur, Tangail, was restored after about six hours. Communication resumed after the derailed bogie was recovered.

Rail communication was restored at around 3pm on Thursday (October 29). Earlier, at 8:50am, a bogie of the Nilsagar Express had derailed.

Railway authorities and locals said that when the Nilsagar Express, which had left Dhaka for Chilahati, reached the Mahera railway station area of Mirzapur, a wheel of a rear bogie came off the track.

At that time, the train dragged the derailed bogie for about one kilometre.

This damaged the block point of the railway line. Alongside damage to the coach, sleepers broke and the rail line bent.

Mahera railway station master Rakibul Hasan said broad gauge is currently running. However, metre gauge is closed. As a result, trains have been stuck at various stations.

Trains are moving at a speed of 10 kilometres per hour over the damaged one-kilometre stretch, station master Rakibul Hasan said.
