The deadline for fitting a manual number plate on the front of motorcycles has been extended by more than a month and a half. Instead of November 15, motorcycle owners will now have until December 31, 2026, to fit the plate.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has approved a proposal to this effect from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

Confirming the matter, BRTA Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman said that because the number of registered motorcycles is large, the earlier deadline was not sufficient. Considering this, a proposal was sent to the ministry to extend the deadline from November 15 to December 31, and the ministry has approved it.

Earlier, a BRTA public notice had directed that manual number plates be fitted and displayed on the front of motorcycles by November 15.

Under the Road Transport Act 2018 and the Road Transport Rules 2022, motorcycles are required to use RFID-enabled retro-reflective metal number plates at the rear. The directive to fit a plate at the front follows on from that requirement.

Under the BRTA's instructions, a scooter's front number plate must be 200 millimetres long and 100 millimetres wide. For other motorcycles, the length is set at 285 millimetres and the width at 50 millimetres. On both types of plate, the height of the letters and digits must be at least 20 millimetres.

The number plate must be made of stainless steel or aluminium. The Bangla letters and digits must be written in black on a white background. No additional design or decorative element may be kept on the plate. On motorcycles other than scooters, the number may be placed in one straight line.
