US Vice President JD Vance has said President Donald Trump will not allow the ongoing conflict with Iran to turn into a “forever war”. He made the remarks while defending the administration’s military operation in the face of criticism over US involvement in the Middle East.

Vance spoke at a Fox News town hall in Fort Worth, Texas, where a Republican voter asked whether the administration had kept its promise to end costly foreign wars.

Recalling his own military service in Iraq, Vance said he understood people’s anger over foreign adventurism in the Middle East.

He said the United States had been involved with Iran in one way or another for the past seven months, and that the US has been dealing with the Iran issue for 47 years. He assured voters that Donald Trump will not let Iran become a “forever war”.

Vance argued that opposing long-term military intervention does not mean abandoning the use of military force altogether. In his words, Trump will achieve America’s goals, after which the administration will turn its attention to its other priorities.
