Man's Right Hand Severed in Kushtia's Daulatpur Over Bamboo Cutting; Police Recover 13 Looted Buffaloes

In Jamalpur village of Pragpur Union, a border area of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia, a 32-year-old man named Roni has allegedly been hacked with sharp weapons and had his right hand severed in a dispute over bamboo cutting. The family says the attack took place beside a graveyard at around 9am on Friday (30 October).
The injured Roni is the son of the late Bishu Lathar of Jamalpur village. He was first taken in critical condition to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex. After initial treatment he was sent to Kushtia, and when his condition worsened he was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, the family said.
According to local sources, a few days ago bamboo was sought from local residents to build a sitting platform for the BGB in the border area under Jamalpur BOP. At that time, four or five bamboos were cut from Roni's bamboo grove without his permission and given to the BGB. Roni abused a man named Suman over the incident. It is alleged that, in retaliation, Roni was attacked while alone on his way home on Friday morning after cutting grass in the field for his buffaloes.
The family alleges that the attack was led by Suman (26), son of Nazir, together with Uzir (45), son of Shamsul Mondal, Uzir's son Rumon (22), Kamu (30), son of Rob Kul, Jambu (25), Laskar (35), son of Ranjit Mondal, and Montu (26), son of Shahidul, along with several others carrying locally made sharp weapons. When Roni tried to resist, his right hand was severed and he suffered serious injuries in various parts of his body.
Local residents claim that Suman, who allegedly led the attack, is a known drug trader in the border area. They also allege that he is one of the named accused in the killing of a drug trader named Joni in the border area in November 2025.
Meanwhile, while family members were busy taking Roni to hospital, the accused allegedly attacked and looted his house. The family claims that 13 buffaloes kept at the house and about 30 maunds of jute loaded on two carts were taken away. Roni's motorcycle was also set on fire, they said.
On receiving the news, Daulatpur police went to the scene and brought the situation under control. The 13 buffaloes named in the looting allegation were later recovered from the house of a local man named Niamat. Police also recovered the two cartloads of jute while they were being moved.
Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge Khaledur Rahman said, 'A man named Roni has been hacked and seriously injured over bamboo cutting. Police reached the scene and recovered the 13 buffaloes and two cartloads of jute named in the looting allegation. Those involved in the incident have been identified. They will be brought under the law quickly.'
Asked about the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Roni, commander of Kushtia's 47 BGB Battalion, said he did not know anything about bamboo being cut for the BGB. He said he would look into the matter and comment later.
