The Coast Guard has seized 40,000 kilograms of cement in Chattogram while it was being smuggled to Myanmar by cargo boat. Eight people were detained in the incident and the cargo boat used in the smuggling was also seized.

The cement was seized on Thursday evening during an operation in the Karnaphuli channel near ghat number 15 in the Patenga police station area of Chattogram city.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan disclosed the information on Friday.

Sabbir Alam Sujan said members of the Coast Guard outpost at Patenga, acting on a tip-off, searched a suspicious cargo boat. The search found 40,000 kilograms of cement, worth about four lakh taka, being taken illegally to Myanmar.

The Coast Guard officer added that the process of taking further legal action against the seized cement, the boat used in the smuggling and the detained persons is under way.
