Maradona Stadium to Reopen After Three Years With Argentina-Germany Women's Friendly

Staff Reporter

Argentina's Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is set to reopen after being closed for renovation for three years. The stadium will formally resume its journey with a friendly match between the women's teams of Argentina and Germany.

The two teams will play the match as part of their preparations ahead of the women's World Cup to be held in Brazil in 2027.

The stadium is located in La Plata, Buenos Aires. It was closed for renovation in 2023, and since then all sporting activity there had stopped. Renovation work is still ongoing.

Football will return to the ground with the match on November 29, it has been announced.

After Maradona's death, the stadium was renamed from Estadio Ciudad de La Plata in honour of Argentina's World Cup-winning legend.

The stadium is run by the Argentine Football Association (AFA). Fernando Islas Casares, president of the association's protocol committee, said about 25 percent of the renovation work has been completed.

The German Football Federation said in a statement that Germany's women will face the hosts in a friendly organised to mark the reopening of the Estadio Unico Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, located near the Argentine capital.
