Six patients with cancer, kidney disease and other serious illnesses in Tangail Sadar have each received a medical assistance cheque of Tk 100,000, totalling Tk 600,000.

At the distribution ceremony at the Tangail Sadar Upazila Parishad building on Friday (30 October) at noon, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said the government is giving the highest priority to taking medical assistance and development activities to helpless and destitute people.

The state minister said the prime minister attaches the highest importance to standing beside helpless and destitute people. Assistance for people with cancer, kidney disease and other serious illnesses is being given special priority, he said.

He said if anyone else with a serious illness remains outside the assistance programme, the highest steps would be taken from his side if they apply. The programme will continue, he added.

Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said the scope of assistance in various sectors has been expanding since the BNP government took responsibility. Family cards, farmer cards and allowances for imams and muezzins are being given, and development work in the area is also under way, he said.

He also said the amount of development and financial assistance is increasing. The prime minister gave a larger amount of grants during the last Durga Puja as well, and the amount of such assistance will increase further in future, he said.

Chaired by Tangail Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Mia, the ceremony was attended by former district BNP general secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, Sadar Thana BNP president Azgar Ali, former district BNP organising secretaries Ashraf Paheli and Shafiqur Rahman Shafiq, district Jubo Dal convener Khandaker Rashedul Alam Rashed and Jubo Dal central executive committee member Abdullah Al Kafi Shahed.

Chairmen of various unions, leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations, and local dignitaries were also present.

After the cheque distribution, an inspection room of Tangail Sadar MP and State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku was inaugurated with the aim of ensuring public services and making government activities more accessible.

The upazila nirbahi officer, the assistant commissioner (land), officials of various government departments and leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations were present at the inauguration.
