Santner passes Sodhi for most T20 wickets against India and reaches 150-wicket milestone

Staff Reporter

New Zealand left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner has set a new record for wickets in Twenty20 cricket against India. He has passed his teammate Ish Sodhi to become the leading New Zealand wicket-taker against India in this format.

In the fourth T20 of the series against India in Auckland on Friday, Santner took 2 wickets for 24 runs. His two victims were Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Those two wickets took his total against India to 32.

The record previously belonged to Ish Sodhi, who had 30 wickets against India. Santner has now moved past that mark with two wickets to spare.

Santner has played 31 T20 matches against India so far, with a bowling average of 26.06. He has taken four wickets in a match twice against India, and his best figures are 4 for 11.

In the same match he reached another milestone — 150 wickets in international T20 cricket. Santner is the third New Zealand bowler to reach that mark.

In all, Santner now has 151 international T20 wickets from 142 matches, at an average of 23.09. He has taken four wickets in a match four times, with best figures of 4 for 11.

Only two bowlers sit above Santner on New Zealand's all-time international T20 wicket list — Ish Sodhi and Tim Southee. Sodhi has 165 wickets, while Southee took 164 wickets in 126 matches.
