Ten-year-old madrasa student dies in Hatirpool, family says it was suicide

Staff Reporter

A 10-year-old madrasa student named Abu Hasan has died in the Hatirpool area under Kalabagan police station in the capital. On Friday, 30 October, after the evening, family members rescued him in an unconscious state and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead. The family says he took his own life.

Hasan's village home is in the Ashtagram area of Kishoreganj. His father's name is Islam Uddin. Hasan was the second of three siblings. For the past month he had been living with his family in a rented house in the Hatirpool area of the capital.

His aunt, Swapna Begum, said Hasan had suffered from mental problems since childhood, and showed absent-mindedness and restlessness. He had been admitted to a madrasa in Dhaka but did not want to stay there. He stayed at that madrasa for about two months.

Swapna Begum also said that he was later taken to the village and admitted to another madrasa, where he began crying. Considering his distress, his father brought him back to Dhaka a month ago.

Shortly before Friday evening, family members found Hasan unconscious inside a room of the house, Swapna Begum said. He was quickly rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where a doctor examined him and declared him dead.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed the death, citing the doctor. He said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue and the concerned police station has been informed.
