Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned that if the people's verdict of the referendum is not implemented through parliament, they will be forced to call a one-point movement to bring down the government.

He made the remarks on Saturday evening (31 October) at a wayside rally at Murli Mor in Jessore during the 11-party long march towards Dhaka-Khulna-Kushtia in support of seven demands.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said: "If the problem is not solved in parliament, today's seven points will eventually turn into one point."

He said: "We want to resolve the seven demands, including implementing the people's verdict of the referendum and completing the speedy trial of the July killings, by sitting in parliament. But if that does not happen, a call for a mass uprising will be given again together with the people of the country. Do not force us to call a one-point movement to bring down the government if necessary."

Also speaking at the rally were Jamaat secretary general Professor Mia Golam Parwar, MP Hasnat Abdullah, NCP joint member secretary Saeed Mostafiz, Mustafizur Rahman Iran, engineer Rashed Pradhan, LDP's Billal Hossain Niazi, BDP chairman Anwar Hossain Chan and Mufti Sharafat Hossain.

Organisers said the long march's wayside rally eventually turned into a public meeting.

After the Jessore rally, the long march motorcade led by the Jamaat ameer set off for Jhenaidah via Monihar, Barandipara, Sheikhhati High Court Mor, Natun Uposhohor Khajura bus stand, Palbari, Churamonkati and Satmail, and through Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah.

Hundreds of men and women stood on both sides of the road to welcome the long march motorcade as it passed.
