Staff Reporter

Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a battery-run autorickshaw in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat. Another passenger of the autorickshaw was seriously injured in the incident.

The accident took place at around 6pm on Saturday (31 October) at Soulat in the Sarail area of Kalai municipality, on the Kalai-Bogura regional highway.

The deceased are Nurnabi (57), son of the late Nayeb Ali of Aplapara village in Kalai upazila, and Enamul Haque (55), son of the late Mafiz Uddin of the same village. The injured man, Sohrab Hossain (52), is the son of Yusuf Ali of the same village.

Police and eyewitnesses said a speeding truck heading towards Joypurhat collided head-on in the evening with a passenger-carrying battery-run autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction. The autorickshaw was mangled in the collision.

Nurnabi died on the spot in the collision. One of Enamul Haque's legs was severed.

With the help of local people, police rescued the injured Enamul Haque and Sohrab Hossain and took them to Kalai Upazila Health Complex.

When their condition deteriorated there, they were sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for better treatment. However, Enamul Haque died on the way to the hospital.

Kalai police station's officer-in-charge (investigation), Md. Emayedul Jahedi, confirmed the two deaths. He said police and local people quickly rescued the injured and arranged their treatment.

He also said the truck's driver and helper fled after the accident, so they could not be detained. However, the truck and the autorickshaw have been seized. Further legal steps in the incident are under process.
