Jubo Dal Leader Accused of Beating Chhatra Dal Activists in Khagrachhari's Matiranga, Four Injured
A Jubo Dal leader has been accused of beating and injuring leaders and activists of his own party's student wing in Tabalchhari Union of Matiranga Upazila in Khagrachhari. Md Yusuf, member-secretary of the union Jubo Dal, is accused of attacking union Chhatra Dal leaders and activists over an attempt to detain two Chhatra League workers.
At least four Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were injured in the incident. It took place at around 12:30 pm on Sunday (1 November) at Tabalchhari Bazar.
Mominur Islam, president of Tabalchhari Union Chhatra Dal, alleged that several union Chhatra Dal activists tried at noon to detain two Chhatra League workers who were in a drug-intoxicated state. At that point Jubo Dal member-secretary Md Yusuf suddenly turned on the Chhatra Dal activists and at one stage beat and injured them.
The injured are union Chhatra Dal members Md Abdur Rahim, Md Babu, Md Roni and Md Mehedi. All of them are receiving treatment at Matiranga Upazila Health Complex, according to local BNP leader Helal Uddin.
Confirming the incident, union BNP leader Helal Uddin said, 'There was a scuffle between the Chhatra Dal activists and two Chhatra League workers. As the two Chhatra League workers were residents of Jubo Dal leader Yusuf's ward, he took their side and beat the Chhatra Dal activists.'
The allegation of an attack on activists of the party's own associate organisation has sparked discussion and criticism in local political circles.
However, no statement was available from the accused Jubo Dal leader Md Yusuf regarding the allegations.
Tabalchhari Union Chhatra Dal president Mominur Islam has demanded a proper investigation into the incident and necessary action against those responsible.
