Businessman beaten to death in Lakshmipur after asking for his motorcycle back, son also injured
In Lakshmipur, a businessman named Hossain Mia (50) has died in an attack and beating after he went to ask for the return of a motorcycle that had been taken for 10 minutes and not returned even after 13 days. His son, rural medical practitioner Saiful Islam, was also beaten in the incident.
The incident took place on Sunday night (November 1) at Kazirdighirpar Bazar in Uttar Hamchadi Union of Sadar Upazila.
The deceased, Hossain Mia, was the son of Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan of the Kazirdighirpar area and a tailoring businessman at the local market. He was known to have been suffering from heart disease beforehand. The injured Saiful Islam accused Shakil Hossain of the same area and his followers of carrying out the attack.
According to eyewitnesses and the deceased's family, although 13 days had passed since Shakil took Saiful's motorcycle saying it was for 10 minutes, he was not returning it. People from both sides were scheduled to sit at a shop in the market over the motorcycle. But when Shakil refused to sit for the meeting, an argument broke out with Saiful and his father Hossain Mia. At one stage, Shakil and another man named Biplob beat Hossain Mia. He fell ill as a result. He later died on the way to hospital. Saiful was also injured in the beating during the incident.
The injured Saiful Islam said Shakil took the vehicle from him on October 19 saying it was for 10 minutes. When it was not returned, he raised the matter several times. On Saturday (October 31) they were called to sit, on the understanding that the vehicle would be returned. Later he, his father and his elder brother went to fetch the vehicle. Shakil then struck his father on the chest and nose, causing his father's death. Saiful said he too was injured in the beating, and added: I want justice for my father's killing.
Sadar Hospital medical officer Zahurul Islam Roni said the man named Hossain was brought to the hospital dead. The cause of death will be known once the final report is received after the post-mortem examination.
Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Wahid Parvez said the deceased's body is kept at the Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem. A drive is under way to arrest the accused. Preparations for a case are also being made.
