District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested an imam named Nur Alam Sheikh (32) in Munshiganj on allegations that he secretly recorded a housewife's private moments and threatened to spread the video.

The arrest was announced in a press release sent by Munshiganj district police on Monday morning (November 2).

Nur Alam was arrested earlier, at around 8:30pm on Sunday (November 1), from a madrasa in Sreenagar upazila of the district. The mobile phone he used was also seized at the time of the arrest.

Police said the arrested man is married and a father of four children. A process is under way to file a regular case against him at Tongibari Police Station over the incident.

According to police sources, Nur Alam Sheikh had been serving as imam of a Jame mosque in the Baligaon area of Tongibari upazila for about 18 months. He also taught religion at home to a local child.

Police said a close relationship developed between him and that child's mother through those visits. At one stage, he allegedly recorded the housewife's private moments in secret.

According to police, when the matter became known about a month ago, the mosque committee relieved him of his duties as imam. He then had to leave the area.

Since leaving the area, he had allegedly been threatening the housewife in various ways.

At one point, he allegedly sent the recorded video online to a member of the housewife's family and pressured her to meet him. He also allegedly threatened to spread the video on social media if she did not meet him.

Arjun Kumar Das, an inspector of the district Detective Branch, said a raid was conducted after the complaint was received. The accused was arrested from a madrasa in Sreenagar on Sunday night along with the mobile phone he used.

Inspector Arjun Kumar Das added that during preliminary interrogation Nur Alam admitted his involvement in the incident. Legal action is being taken over the matter, he said.
